Neighbourhood Identity

“Neighbourhood Identity” is a participatory art project designed to create community symbols of identity. For this purpose, logos for six neighborhood associations were created, based on the idea that these entities provide the most direct representation of their communities.

In the initial preparation and mapping phase, six neighborhood associations from the municipality of Arucas, Gran Canaria, were selected. This was followed by a series of “listening meetings,” where residents shared their sense of identity with their neighborhoods through stories, symbols, places, and legends with the PSJM artistic team (Cynthia Viera and Pablo San José).

Days later, another six meetings were held where Viera and San José presented the associations with the graphic translation of those community sentiments.

As a final event, on Saturday, December 17, 2022, representatives from the six associations gathered to collectively paint the new logos onto a canvas. The painting workshop was led by artist Mireia Tramunt and documented by photographer Asiria Álvarez.

‘Neighbourhood Identity’ received support from the ICDC’s Polo Canario Cultural and Creative Development Programme, Canary Islands Government’s Apúntate a la Cultura initiative, and the collaboration of the Arucas Town Council’s Department of Citizen Participation.
